TAIYUAN太原 · SHANXI

Four places worth your time in Taiyuan.

Taiyuan is the kind of city you arrive at for one reason and leave talking about for another. Coal country for a century and the provincial capital of Shanxi for a thousand years, it carries a depth that gets lost in the travel guides. These four places are the ones I would tell a friend about.

01ANCESTRAL TEMPLE COMPLEX

Jinci

A 1,500-year-old ancestral temple complex at the foot of Xuanweng Mountain, where cypress trees older than the temple itself shade spring water that has run through the grounds since the Song dynasty. It began as a memorial to the founder of the Jin state and grew into one of northern China's most important ancestral shrines, with a stream of halls, pavilions, and the famously ancient Zhou cypress, which local lore places near 3,000 years old.

02BOTANICAL GARDEN

Taiyuan Botanical Garden

A cluster of three sculptural domed greenhouses by the Austrian studio Delugan Meissl, housing tropical, desert, and subtropical plant collections from across China and abroad. Opened in 2021 on reclaimed coal-mining land north of the city, the garden reads as a quiet counterpoint to Taiyuan's industrial heritage - the kind of place you can spend two unhurried hours and leave with over 600 photographs.

03HISTORIC PEDESTRIAN STREET

Zhonglou Street

A pedestrian commercial street that traces back to the Ming dynasty and was once the city's social and shopping spine. After a four-year restoration completed in 2022, the lane pairs restored Republican-era shopfronts with a working bell tower at its center, and a fresh wave of indie cafes, bookstores, and craft shops tucked into the old facades. Bring an appetite for taiyangbing and a tolerance for slow walking.

04FOOD NEIGHBORHOOD

Laojunying

Once the camp of a Song-dynasty garrison, Laojunying has quietly become Taiyuan's most-loved food neighborhood - a dense cluster of small stalls, noodle shops, and late-night bars catering to nearby Shanxi University students. It is the best place in the city to sample Shanxi street food in one sitting: liangpi rolled at the counter, knife-cut noodles pulled to order, fried tofu in chili oil, and skewers eaten standing up.

PLAN A VISIT

A few practical notes.

WHEN TO COME

Late spring through mid-autumn is the safest weather window. Winters are cold and dry but largely tourist-free, which works in Taiyuan's favor.

GETTING IN

Taiyuan Wusu Airport (TYN) sits southeast of the city, with a dedicated airport express bus into downtown. The high-speed rail station serves Beijing in under three hours and Xi'an in roughly four.

HOW TO COMBINE

Jinci and the Botanical Garden both need half-day trips and pair with a quiet evening in Zhonglou. Save Laojunying for after 18:00, when the stalls are firing and the students arrive.

Hours and addresses are accurate at time of writing and worth confirming before you go.
